What "Your Data Isn't the Product" Really Means
It's an easy line to say. Here's what makes it true — and how to check.
"Your data isn't the product" might be the most repeated promise in tech — and one of the emptiest, because it's almost never explained. A real version of it doesn't rest on a slogan; it rests on a few concrete things you can actually check. Here's what to look for, in any AI you let into your life.
Follow the money. If something is free, it's usually paid for by your attention or your data. A product you pay for has a simpler arrangement: you're the customer, not the product. There's no advertising business quietly depending on what you say — because the business is the product itself.
Your conversations shouldn't train anyone's AI. Many AI tools quietly improve their models using what you type. A real privacy promise means your conversations are never used to train AI models — not the company's, and not the outside providers it relies on. It's a fair thing to ask outright, and a fair thing to expect in writing.
Not sold, and not profiled. "We don't sell your data" is a lower bar than it sounds. The stronger promise is that no one is building an advertising profile of you from what you share, either. The two often shelter behind each other; look for both.
You can see it — and delete it. The strongest proof isn't a promise at all; it's a control. If you can look at what an AI remembers about you and delete it whenever you choose, a company can't quietly do otherwise. A promise you can check beats a promise you're asked to trust.
Where Morgan fits
Morgan is built to pass its own test. It's something you pay for, so you're the customer — never the product. Your conversations are never used to train AI models, never sold, and never turned into an advertising profile. The memory of what you share is kept in the United Kingdom. And you can see what Morgan remembers about you, and delete it whenever you like. It's early — we're opening access in stages. If an AI you don't have to be wary of is what you've been waiting for, you're welcome to join the waitlist.
The specifics live in our privacy notice, and we'll keep it honest as Morgan grows.
